Students

Engaging in Service Learning across Oklahoma

K20 Center supports interdisciplinary service learning projects that connect schools and communities with teams of OU students and faculty who work to address local needs by designing, building, and deploying real systems to solve problems.

Participating teams of students are

  • multidisciplinary: drawing students from across the university in science, technology, engineering and mathematics [STEM]-related fields;
  • vertically-integrated: maintaining a mix of freshman through seniors, graduates, and post-doctorates;
  • long-term: each student participates in a project for multiple semesters;
  • assessed: continually refined; and
  • transferable: disseminated for use in other schools and communities.

The continuity, depth, and disciplinary breadth of these teams enable delivery of projects of significant benefit to schools and communities.  OU students gain skills and experience in communication, ethics, multidisciplinary teams, leadership and project management, and in the role that STEM-related fields can play to enhance schools and communities.  Schools and communities gain access to technology and expertise that would normally be prohibitively expensive, giving them the potential to improve learning environments and services.
